PAWS pets, pets for life
Dr Stephen Cutter B.V.Sc(hons)

If you want to adopt an animal, it’s not always easy to know what animal is right for you. PAWS organises seminars to help people make a decision and explains about the hard work and dedication a responsible pet owner needs. These seminars are held on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons at the Animal Rescue Centre in Palmerston.

PAWS organises seminars for people who want to adopt a pet at PAWS. In these seminars you learn how to choose the right pet and how to communicate with them. These seminars are also to prevent impulse buying and to reduce the number of pets being dumped and abandoned. These free hour workshops aim at informing owners of the hard work and dedication it takes to be a responsible pet owner. To make sure you make the right choice for a pet, the employees at PAWS will take a little quiz. They ask questions like; What is your ideal pet? What size yard do you have? What activities do you want your pet to be involved in? What do you expect from your pet? Etc. Through these questions the employee will know your motivation for adopting a pet. They’ll also know what type of pet is perfect for you, because they know all the characteristics from the dogs and cats in the shelter.

It’s not only important that you, as an owner, can enjoy your pet, but also your family and friends. Did you know that 66% off the people who got bitten by a dog they know? That’s why you learn how to communicate with your pet, and how to read the signals that your dog or cat is giving you. This way you prevent problems in the future.

Dogs or cats that come to Paws have been replaced minimum four times in different homes. That’s why these dogs could have:
• Separation anxiety; they are afraid to be left alone. Some of the symptoms are: barking, breaking stuff,...
• Dominance: these dogs think they are in charge. Some of the symptoms are: leaning, bossy;
• Barking;
• Unfamiliar with home setting;
• Wrong types of socialisation: they may not have been socialised with cats or other dogs.
